Frequently Asked Questions

What does Cub Scouting offer my son?
Cub Scouts teaches our boys strong character, values, good citizenship, and responsibility while having a lot of fun along the way.  Scouting provides a great opportunity for your son to interact with other boys his age and you and your son to do many fun activities together, including camping.
What is the time commitment for Cub Scouts?
The Pack meets as a group once a month. The individual Dens typically meet twice a month (one meeting and one outing), although each Den has its own schedule.
What are the responsibilities of a parent?
  • Provide help and support for the den and pack.
  • Work with your son on advancement projects and activities.
  • Attend pack meetings with your son and present his advancement awards to him at the pack meeting.
  • Attend and assist with den outings.
  • Attend Cub Scout Family campouts with your son.
Do Cub Scouts go camping?
Yes, we offer three camping opportunities for Cub Scouts - two summer tent camping trips and one cabin fall camping trip. See the camping page of our website for detailed information on our camping program.

What other activities are available to Cub Scouts and their families?
Pack 39 is very active, providing a rich environment for boys and their families. Typical annual events include:
  • Soap Box Derby
  • Fall Campout
  • Space Derby
  • Veteran’s Day Observance
  • Klondike Derby
  • Pinewood Derby
  • Blue & Gold Banquet
  • Rocket Launch
  • Summer Camping Trips

How much is it going to cost?
The annual Pack 39 dues of $90 covers such items as the National registration fee, Boys' Life Magazine, the neckerchief and handbook appropriate for your son's rank, the rocket and pinewood derby kits, and all patches and awards for the year (through next March).

Other costs (not included in the Pack 39 dues) include costs for uniforms and camping fees. Youth members participate in one fund-raising activity (popcorn), which helps to cover Den supplies, equipment, and other activities, and can help raise money for your son's Pack dues or camping fees.

When does my son need to wear his uniform?
Boys should attend Pack meetings and Den meetings in full uniform.
Where can I buy uniforms, pack and den number patches?
The Des Plaines Valley Scout Shop is located at 811 West Hillgrove (Hillgrove and Brainard).
